Twin Fins & FishesFirst made from a broken longboard in 1967 by knee-boarder Steve Lis at Point Loma, San Diego with the intention to ride some of the hollowest, most technical waves of that area. It came onto the mainstream scene in 1972 when Hawaiian Jim Blears and David Nuuhiwa rode the design to place 1st and 2nd in the World Championships held in small and sloppy surf at Huntington Beach, California. The obvious advantages that the board held began the Fish’s small wave reputation, but due to the reserved nature of Lis and his friends, its validity in waves of consequence was rarely heard of, let alone recognised. The design is noted for its speed and capability to cross flat and fat sections, which helps it to hold a place in all our hearts. The Fish has since been renowned for representing a quantum leap in surfboard design which helped in radicalising the shortboard revolution. |
